Once, a few summers ago, my mom, sisters, and I went to a watercolor painting camp of sorts with a local painter we really admire. We all stayed in her 100 year-old home with creaky wooden floors, heavy antique quilts, and the smell of oil paints and sunshine. We painted, of course, but we also stayed up late and told stories; we swapped recipes over homemade meals; we imagined what had transpired in that old house, and once, we all crammed into a tiny car to avoid the rain and laughed until it stopped pouring. Basically we had a ball when we were painting, and we had a ball when we weren't.
We have been working with the wonderful Angie from Ace Camps to put together a workshop this next summer about filmmaking. It is going down in the lovely city of Asheville, North Carolina; a place we have never been but by the sounds of it's nickname, "Paris of the South", we are eager to explore. We hope to teach a few of you what it takes to make a film, and when we're not doing that, we have our fingers crossed that we will all be having a ball. Register here.
(The pictures are an attempt to show you how we can conjure up a ball even while getting our pictures taken, which is on the bottom of our activities-we-enjoy list)

Wahoo for you guys! And your new website is so very fresh and clean. Such a relief after your last one with water splashed all over it. But really. Really great, and the logo too.
ReplyDeleteIts true you guys really know how to have a ball anywhere anytime!
ReplyDeleteAny plans for a NYC workshop? Sounds amazing.
ReplyDeleteNo plans as of yet, but we would love to hold a workshop there. We will be sure to let you know if it happens!
Deletethis makes me happy :) awesome recollections.
ReplyDeleteAh, wishing I lived closer to North Carolina. And America.
ReplyDeleteIt really does sound like a ball.
we almost took a trip down to asheville this weekend to our friends' cabin! sigh. maybe next summer... ;)
ReplyDeleteDitto to what your friend's Abbey and Tif say!
ReplyDeleteand the site is fantastic!
I second the request for a NYC workshop.
ReplyDeleteI am interested in making the trek to NC, though. I looked around the Ace Camp website, but couldn't tell - do we need to bring our own video cameras for this workshop? Our own laptops with NLEs? Or will all equipment be provided?
Hi Rachel! Noted about the NYC workshop. As for the equipment, you will need to bring your own camera, one with manual settings, and your own laptop with editing software you are familiar with. Let us know if you have any other questions. We hope to see you there!
DeleteThanks for getting back to me!
ReplyDeleteMy next question is then - do you have a few cameras you'd recommend for your class? I have editing stuff, but I don't have a nice video camera. If there is a post somewhere where you talk cameras, you can just point me at that if you like. Anything under $2,000? Or $2,500? Or should I just rent something for the class?
For video you can buy anything from a Canon T3i to a Canon 5D Mark III. But if you are just getting started a T3i is a great cropped sensor camera that shoots the same video quality as the Canon 7D. If you are looking to do video more seriously and want the added photo quality, you can buy the older Canon 5D Mark II, a full frame camera, which is less expensive now than it used to be. We recommend investing in lenses because lenses are really what can help you get the right look for different situations.
DeleteBut if you want to rent a camera based on what we've recommended and see if you like it, then that would also be a good option. Also renting a couple lenses would be a good idea as well. We recommend a 24-105mm, 50mm and a 35mm to start. The 24-105 is a pretty good multi-use lens and the 50mm is a great portrait lens. The 35mm is a great wide-angle lens with good depth of field.
Hopefully this helps!
haha, love that laughing photo! you're such a doll. :)
ReplyDeletelove that portrait
